Fronds 4–8, tufted, 10.5–90 cm tall; stipe purplish black, 6–50 cm long, glabrous except for scales at extreme base; lamina ± triangular in outline, 4.5–40 cm long, 13–34 cm wide, (1–)2-partially 3-pinnate (some simple pinnate fronds may be present); pinnae in 6–12 pairs, the upper 5–8 simple, the lower 2–5 up to 14 cm long, pinnate with 5–7 pairs of pinnules, the lower 1–2 basiscopic pinnulessometimes again pinnate with 3 pairs of ultimate segments; segments (pinnae, pinnules or ultimate segments according to position) narrowly triangular from a shortly cordate to rounded base to a usually narrow apex, 0.8–7.2(–8) cm long, 0.7–2.3(–4) cm wide, often curved, rarely hastate; rhachis purplish black, very shortly bristly pubescent on upper surface; stalklets same colour as rhachis, 1–4 mm long (apical one 8 mm); veins not easily visible but often so with ordinary transmitted light, strongly anastomosing; sterile margins crenate-dentate. Sori and indusium continuous.
