Subshrub 0.05–1(–2) m tall from an often branched rhizome; bark brown or greyish, ± rough, flaking; branches purplish with pale lenticels, becoming paler. Leaves petiolate; lamina oblong or elliptic to oblanceolate, less often obovate, 2.5–12(–16) cm long, 1.2–3.7 cm wide, acute or mucronate to rounded at the apex, cuneate at the base, margin glandular-serrate or rarely entire with venation similar to B. zanguebarica; petiole 1–4(–14) mm long; stipules laciniate or fin-like, persistent on young stems. Flowers solitary or 2–4 in fascicles, the fascicles often clustered together at the base of young shoots, appearing before the leaves; pedicels (0.9–)1.3–2.5 cm long. Sepals pink, oblong, at first 5–6 mm long, rounded, spreading or reflexed after flowering, becoming crimson-red in fruit and enlarging to 8–10 mm. Petals white, often tinged pink or with a pink central line, obovate to narrowly-oblanceolate, 6–8 mm long, narrowed to the base. Stamens (13–19)20(–21–22); anthers yellow, 1.5–2 mm long, often twisting spirally after dehiscence. Carpels 5–7 with styles completely united; stigma small. Drupelets black, 6–8 mm long and wide.

Rhizomatous shrublet or shrub up to 1 (2) m. high, frequently flowering just above ground level, with bark brown, ± rough, flaking; branches striate, purplish with pale lenticels at first, becoming white or pale brown and then ± ferrugineous, with bark not usually exfoliating. Leaves petiolate; lamina 4–12·4 (16) ×1·2–3·7 cm., oblong or elliptic to oblanceolate or more rarely obovate, acute or mucronate to rounded at the apex, with margin densely ± curved-glandular-serrulate or more rarely entire, cuneate at the base, herbaceous to chartaceous, with primary lateral nerves ascending, interconnected by more widely spreading secondary laterals in turn linked by tertiary cross-veins, prominent above, plane below; petiole 1–4 (14) mm. long, rather stout, flat or grooved above. Flowers solitary or 1–4 in fascicles, often with several fascicles clustered together, at the base of current year’s shoots, appearing before the leaves; pedicels (0·9) 1·3–2·5 cm. long in fruit. Sepals pink, 5–6 mm. long in flower, oblong, rounded, spreading or reflexed after flowering, becoming crimson-red, 8–10 mm. long, broadly oblong, flat and spreading or reflexed in fruit. Petals white, frequently tinged pink or with pink centre line, 6–8 mm. long, obovate to narrowly oblanceolate, narrowed at the base but not clawed. Stamens (13–19) 20 (21–22), with anthers yellow, 1·5–2 mm. long, 3/4–11/4 times as long as the filaments, straight, often twisting spirally after dehiscence. Carpels 5–7, with styles completely united; stigma small, scarcely lobed. Drupelets 6–8 × 6–7 mm., curved-lenticular, compressed.

Widespread in tropical and southern subtropical regÂions, as far south as northern South West Africa; in sandy soils.
Small rhizomatous shrublets with virgate, grooved branches, up to 1 m tall (rarely someÂwhat taller); wood yellow below grey-brown peeling bark. Leaves deciduous, erect, close together, alternate, narrowly obovate, c. 8 cm long, 2 cm broad, usually obtuse above, apicu-late, attenuate towards the base, forming a short petiole, margin closely and shallowly serrulate with the teeth bearing ovoid glands, firm, shiny, the lateral veins curved upwards along margin; stipules deeply dissected into subulate segÂments, striate, intrapetiolar, persisting on first year shoots. Flowers in short, axillary, sessile (1) 3-6-flowered fascicles; the bracts resembÂling the stipules; pedicels c. 8 mm long at anthesis, somewhat longer in fruit, articulated at the base. Sepals narrowly oblong, c. 5 mm at anthesis, up to 1 cm in fruit, pink or red, spreading or reflexed. Petals narrowly obovate, somewhat longer than sepals, white or pinkish, reflexed at anthesis. Stamens about 20; anthers opening by longitudinal slits. Carpels 5, rounded, inserted basally on the torus; style terete, stigma apical, small. Fig. 3.
