Erect, decumbent or ascending annual, 5–15(25) cm. tall, glabrous; stems usually diffusely branched, glabrous to rarely slightly pubescent. Leaves sessile or shortly petiolate, 2–15(38) x 0.75–5(13) mm., opposite, ovate, ovate-lanceolate or elliptic, acute or obtuse, entire, or larger leaves occasionally minutely, shallowly dentate, l-3(5)-nerved. Petiole 0–2 mm. long. Flowers axillary or in terminal racemes, slender pedicellate. Pedicels (5)7–12 mm. long in flower, extending in fruit 9–17(25) mm. long. Calyx (1.25)2–4 mm. long, glabrous, divided almost to base; lobes up to 0.5 mm. wide, lanceolate to linear-lanceolate, acute. Corolla white or pale blue, 4–7 mm. long, upper lip emarginate to shallowly bifid. Fertile stamens two, filaments 0.4–1 mm. long; staminodes two, 0.25–0.5(1) mm. long, slender, clavate at apex occasionally with short spur c. 0.75 mm. long, just below. Capsule 1.5–4.5(6) x 1.25–1.75(2.5) mm., obovate- or cylindric-ellipsoid to nearly subglobose, usually longer than calyx.

Calyx (1–)2–4 mm long, glabrous or with few glandular hairs (e.g. Kibuwa 2450 from Kenya), divided almost to base; lobes lanceolate to linear-lanceolate, up to 0.5 mm wide, acute. Corolla white or pale blue, with darker blue or purple markings especially towards base, 4–7(–12) mm long, upper lip emarginate to shallowly bifid. Widespread from West Africa, through Central and East Africa, Sudan, Angola and the Mascarene Islands. In the New World, it is recorded from Costa Rica and Trinidad and through South America from Venezuela to Bolivia and southern Brazil.
Slender, straggling, procumbent or weakly ascending; stems simple or branched up to 40 cm. or more long, subpilose or often glabrous, quadrangular, sometimes rooting at nodes. Leaves 12–20(30) x 8–15 mm., broadly lanceolate to ovate-lanceolate, shortly patent hirsute, acute or obtuse at apex, rounded, subtruncate or shortly cuneate at base, serrate to serrate-crenate, margin occasionally thickened. Petiole 0.5–3 mm. long, hirsute. Flowers white or pink, through blue to purple or mauve, solitary axillary or more usually 2–6 together, fascicled or on very small leafless branches. Bracts 1.25–4 mm. long, narrowly linear. Pedicels 4–22 mm. long, hirsute, somewhat reflexed in fruit Calyx 5–6 mm. long, up to 10 mm. long at fruiting, sparingly hirsute to subglabrous, narrowly winged, markedly so at fruiting. Corolla 10–12 mm. long. Capsule 7–9.5 mm. long, 2.5–3.25 mm. in diam., narrowly oblong-ellipsoid. Seeds pale yellow.
