A common and widespread little herb in the Transvaal and northern Natal; in grassveld, often found where overgrazing or some other factor has diminished the grass cover, as well as in open places such as roadsides. Map 23.
Perennial herb, with annual erect stems becoming prostrate and rooting at nodes, 0.03-0.50 m long. Leaves nearly glabrous to densely pilose, very narrowly to broadly ovate to obovate, apex acute to obtuse, base cuneate; petiole 0-4 mm long. Inflorescence of axillary elongated spike-like cymes, usually single at each node, peduncles slender, 5-47 mm long, with 2-4 flowers towards end. Flowers subsecund, sessile, solitary at each inflorescence node. Bract subulate, 1, with another on oppposite side of axis, up to 4 mm long. Bracteoles 2, similar to bract. Corolla (5)6-8 mm long, white, with or without maroon lines on palate. Pollen 2-porate, 28-36 urn long, sexine areolate. Capsule 4-seeded, glabrous or with a few hairs near apex, delicate, up to 8 mm long. Figure 12.

Two records from the FSA region, both from the Caprivi Strip in northern Namibia, one on the margin of a marsh and the other from a river bank. Recorded by Ensermu (1990) from most of Africa south of the Sahara: from Liberia to the Sudan, through East Africa to Zambia, with some records from Angola and northern Namibia. Occurs in a wide variety of veld types, often associated with water, e.g. marshes or irrigated areas. Description and map taken from PRE specimens only: for fuller description, see Ensermu (1990). Map 23.
Perennial herb, older stems prostrate. Leaves glabrous, ovate, 22-30 x 4-10 mm, apex obtuse, base cuneate; petiole 3-5 mm long. Inflorescence 1 per node, peduncle slender, 14-20 mm long, with 2-4 flowers towards the end. Bract and bracteoles as for J. anagalloides (no. 20). Calyx glabrous. Corolla 6-7 mm long, white. Pollen shortly 2-colporate, 18-20 urn long, sexine areolate. Capsule 4-seeded, delicate, ± 8 mm long.

In southern Africa found only in the northeastern and eastern Transvaal (also from Botswana according to Ensermu 1990). In the rest of Africa, recorded by Ensermu from East Africa (not West Africa), from the Sudan to Zimbabwe and the Transvaal. Occurs in various types of woodland or as a weed in fallow lands. Description and map taken from PRE specimens only; for fuller description, see Ensermu (1990). Map 24.
Annual herb. Stems erect or decumbent, pubescent to densely pilose, denser or the same density at nodes, 0.3-0.4 m high. Leaves sparsely pilose, hairs denser on margin and veins, broadly lanceolate to ovate, 21-65 x 9-34 mm, apex acute or obtuse, base cuneate; petiole 4-18 mm long. Inflorescence as for J. anagalloides (no. 20) but usually 2 per node, one of each pair with a pair of reduced leaves near base, peduncles 10-37 mm long, with (3)4 or 5(-8) flowers near top. Corolla ± 4 mm long, white with maroon lines on palate. Pollen 2-porate, 22-29 urn long, sexine areolate. Capsule 4-seeded, lanceolate, delicate, usually with short hairs scattered over most of surface, these sometimes confined to apex, (6-)7-8(-9) mm long.

In southern Africa it occurs in northern Namibia, northern and southeastern Botswana and in the northwestern and northern central Transvaal, where it does not overlap with the very similar J. matammensis (no. 22). Recorded by Ensermu (1990) from two disjunct areas, one in East Africa from the Sudan to Rwanda, and the other in southwestern and southern central Africa from Angola to Mozambique and as far south as the Transvaal. Occurs in a wide variety of habitats, especially woodlands and disturbed areas. Description and map taken from PRE specimens only; for fuller description, see Ensermu (1990). Map 24.
