Glabrous herb, probably perennial; stems slender, twining. Leaf-blade orbicular in outline, palmately divided to the base, up to 5 cm. in diameter, often much less; lobes 5, elliptic, obtuse and apiculate, the outer ones often bilobed, 2.6–4 cm. long, about 1 cm. wide; petiole 4.5 cm. long; pseudo-stipules present. Flowers axillary, solitary or in 2–3-flowered inflorescences; peduncle 4.5 cm. long; pedicels slender 1.7 cm. long. Sepals elliptic or almost orbicular, 2–5 mm. long, 1.3–2.5 mm. wide, obtuse but mucronulate, often tuberculate. Corolla rose-purple or dark mauve, funnel-shaped, 8–17 mm. long. Capsule globose, 8 mm. in diameter. Seeds brown, subglobose, 4–5.5 mm. long, velvety-pubescent, the edges with long white cottony hairs 5–10 mm. long.

Occurs in tropical Africa, India and possibly the West Indies. In southern Africa it is rare and reaches northern Namibia, northern Botswana (Goncalves 1987: 107), the Northern Province and Mpumalanga. Grows in bushveld, savanna, grassland, riverine forest and also cultivated ground, usually on moist ground. Map 67.
Glabrous, herbaceous, annual or perennial twiner. Stems up to at least 1 m long. Leaves pseudostipulate (pseudostipules resembling leaves but much smaller), orbicular in outline, 20-60 mm in diameter, deeply palmately 5-lobed, outer lobes usually bilobed; lobes elliptic to lanceolate, entire, apex obtuse, apiculate, base narrowed; petiole 40-50 mm long. Flowers axil­lary, solitary or cymosely 2- or 3-flowered; peduncles 40-50 mm long, very slender; bracte-oles minute; pedicel 17 mm long, ± clavate. Sepals subequal, edges membranous, elliptic to orbicular, apex obtuse or rounded, mucronulate, 2-5 mm long, often tuberculate. Corolla funnel-shaped with subcylindric tube, purplish mauve, 10-18 mm long and spreading limb as wide. Capsule subglobose, glabrous, 8-10 mm long. Seeds subglobose, 5-6 mm long, brown, pubes­cent and with 5-10 mm long white hairs on edges. Flowering time March to July.

Annual or perennial glabrous herb. Stems very slender, twining or sometimes prostrate. Leaf-lamina circular in outline, palmately divided to the base, up to 5 cm. in diam., often much less; lobes elliptic to lanceolate 2·6–4 × 1 cm. usually obtuse and apiculate at the apex and narrowed and subpetiolued at the base, the outer ones often 2-lobed; petiole 4–5 cm. long; pseudostipules present resembling the leaves but much smaller. Flowers axillary, solitary or in 2–3-flowered inflorescences; peduncle 4–5 cm. long, very slender, almost filiform; pedicels slender but thicker than the peduncle, more or less 1·7 cm. long, somewhat subclavate; bracteoles minute. Sepals elliptic or almost orbicular, 3–5 mm. long, subequal with membranous edges, usually obtuse but mucronulate, often muriculate. Corolla funnel-shaped, rose-purple or dark mauve, 8–17 mm. long. Capsule globose, glabrous. Seeds subglobose, brown, velvety-pubescent, with 5–10 mm. long white cottony hairs at the edges.
