Slender or much-branched annual herb up to 60 cm. tall; branches slender, pubescent with short glandular hairs and longer simple hairs. Leaf-lamina 1·5–4 × 0·3–1·6 cm., narrowly lanceolate to narrowly oblong-lanceolate, apex obtuse or acute, margin serrate, base rounded or cuneate, thinly appressed-stellate-pubescent on both surfaces and also with glandular hairs in some specimens; petiole up to 1·5 cm. long, with glandular and simple hairs; stipules c. 2 mm. long, subulate, pubescent. Flowers solitary in the upper axils, on filamentous puberulous peduncles up to 3·5 cm. long; pedicel up to 8 mm. long, articulated by a slightly swollen joint to the peduncle, puberulous; bracts absent. Calyx 3–6·5 × 3–7 mm., campanulate, pubescent with simple and glandular hairs, lobed 2/3 of the way down; lobes ovate-acuminate. Petals pink, reddish-orange or purplish, 5·5–10 × 2·5–6·5 mm., narrowly obovate, margins slightly inrolled in the lower half, as long as or considerably longer than the calyx. Stamens with obovate filaments 3·5–4 mm. long, with hairs on the shoulders; anthers 3·5–6 mm. long, pubescent. Ovary oblong-ovoid, stipitate, glandular; styles 3–4 mm. long, puberulous in the lower half. Capsule 5–8 × 5–7 mm., truncate-ovoid to oblong-ovoid, thinly stellate-pubescent with some glands or glabrescent, with spreading horns at the apex up to 1·5 mm. long. Seeds c. 1·75 × 0·75 mm., brown, subreniform, wrinkled and granulate.

An annual, with an erect branching stem, about 1 ft. in height. Branches ascending, slender, clothed with stellate hairs. Leaves subsessile, elliptic-oblong, acute, 1–1 1/2 in. long, serrate, with simple hairs above, stellate ones on the lower surface. Stipules persistent, falcate, lanceolate, pilose, twice the length of the petioles. Peduncles axillary, solitary, 1-flowered, spreading, generally longer than the leaves, slender, pilose near the top. Filaments petaloid, obovate; anthers 2-fid. Capsule obovoid, somewhat 5-lobed, 5-valved; valves with two horns at the upper angles. Seeds reniform, transversely furrowed.

Perennial herb or shrublet, up to c. 1 m. tall, viscid-pubescent with glandular hairs on all parts except the corolla but also with long simple hairs and stellate hairs. Leaf-lamina up to 5·5 × 2·3 cm. but usually less, lanceolate to narrowly oblong-lanceolate, apex acute or subacute, margin serrate, base cuneate or rounded, pilose on both surfaces with appressed stellate hairs and some glandular hairs; petiole up to 1·4 cm. long; stipules 1–2 mm. long, lanceolate-subulate. Flowers solitary in the upper axils; peduncle slender, up to 1·3 cm. long; pedicel c. 3 mm. long; bracts c. 0·5 mm. long, deltoid-subulate. Calyx 5–6 × 5–6 mm., campanulate,-lobed 2/3 of the way; lobes narrowly triangular with long simple hairs and shorter glandular hairs. Petals c. 4–5 × 3 mm., pink, red or rarely whitish, obovate, apex denticulate, retuse or truncate, margin subauriculate and inrolled in the lower half, pilose across the opening created by this inrolling. Stamens with obovate filaments c. 2·5 mm. long, pilose on the shoulders; anthers 5–6 mm. long, pubescent. Ovary shortly stipitate, narrowly obovoid, densely glandular with a few hispidulous hairs at the apex and on the ribs; styles c. 5 mm. long, pubescent and glandular except near the apex. Capsule c. 8 × 7 mm., oblong-obovoid, densely glandular but hispidulous on the ribs, with short spreading horns c. 1·5 mm. long at the apex. Seeds c. 1·5 × 1 mm., subreniform, wrinkled and granulated.
