Shrub or small tree, often scandent, up to 4 m tall; young branches densely ferruginous short-pubescent to ± villous. Leaves obovate to broadly elliptic, 3.2–13.5 cm long, 1.8–7.5 cm wide, usually widest above the middle, broadly acuminate to obtuse at the apex, cuneate to rounded at the base, margin serrate, ± glabrous except for some hairs on the veins above, densely pubescent to ± glabrous except for a few long hairs on the veins beneath; petiole 3–9 mm long, densely ferruginous pubescent. Inflorescence a terminal or axillary 1–5-flowered cyme, axes densely hairy, sometimes ± villous; peduncle 6–10 mm long; pedicels 6–13 mm long. Flowerswhite, very rarely pinkish; sepals 14–18 mm long, green outside, white within; petals lanceolate, 6–10 mm long, ± 2 mm wide. Androgynophore glabrous for 1–2 mm at the base, densely hairy at the apex but not produced; stamens 8–10 mm long; filaments greenish white; anthers yellow; ovary ± 2 mm long, densely hairy; style 8–10 mm long; stigma green. Fruit (1–)4-lobed, 13–17 mm wide, the lobes 7–9 mm long, 7–9 mm wide, green when young, sparsely long hairy. Fig. 3/11 (leaf, p. 9).

Shrub or small tree, sometimes scandent, to 8 m tall; young branches shortly densely brown- to ferruginous stellate-pubescent. Leaves elliptic, 7–16 cm long, 2.3–7 cm wide, acute to acuminate at the apex, rounded to cuneate at the base, margins evenly finely serrate, ± glabrous except for a stellate pubescence on the veins above, densely softly stellate-pubescent all over beneath; petiole 8–13 mm long, shortly stellate-pubescent; stipules subulate to linear, 4–10 mm long, deeply divided or entire. Inflorescences leaf-opposed axillary or terminal 1–6-flowered cymes, the axes shortly stellate-pubescent; peduncle 8–20 mm long; pedicels 4–8 mm long. Sepals 17–20 mm long, white inside, green outside; petals lanceolate, 7–10 mm long, 1–2 mm wide, pink. Androgynophore glabrous for ± 0–0.5 mm at the base, densely hairy but not produced at the apex; stamens 12–17 mm long; filaments white flushed with pink especially towards the apex; ovary 1.5–2 mm long, densely hairy; style 14–17 mm long. Shrub or small tree or semi-scandent with purplish branches; young branchlets coarsely ferruginously pubescent. Leaf-lamina up to 12 × 5·5 cm., elliptic-oblong or ovate-lanceolate, acute to acuminate at the apex, margin finely serrate with glands on the serratures, broadly cuneate or truncate and sometimes oblique at the base, glabrous above, sparsely stellate-pubescent below; nerves fairly prominent on both sides; petiole up to 7·5 mm. long, hispid-pubescent; stipules 0·5 mm. long, linear, pubescent outside, caducous. Inflorescences terminal or leaf-opposed, 2–5-flowered; peduncles up to 15 mm. long, pubescent; pedicels similar, c. 1 cm. long; bracts up to 4 mm. long, linear or lanceolate-triangular, pubescent on the back, entire. Flower-buds oblong. Sepals 1·2–2 cm. long, linear-oblong, greenish or ferruginously pubescent outside with a dense short stellate tomentum interspersed with longer fasciculate hairs, glabrous and white inside. Petals white, 5–9 mm. long, narrowly triangular; lamina not wider than the nectariferous claw and not more than twice its length; claw circumvillous within and ledged above. Androgynophore up to 1·5 mm. long, glabrous, not produced above. Ovary 4-lobed, villous; stigma-lobes broad. Fruit reddish when ripe, up to 2.3 cm. in diam., 4-lobed, sparsely hispid or glabrous.
