Prostrate to ascending ephemeral or short-lived perennial, stems to 0.7 m long. Leaf base attenuate into ill-defined petiole, tip obtuse or subacute. Inflorescences mostly axillary, with at least some, often most, flowers in umbels of 3 or more. Flowers always bisexual. Fruiting pedicels up to 3.5–8 mm long, fairly stout, usually curved. Sepals 1.8–2.6(–3) mm long, whitish, sometimes flushed pink, mauve or yellow. Stamens 5; filaments with wide base. Carpels 5, sculptured forms spiny-papillose or winged.

Prostrate to procumbent spreading glabrous herbs, annual or perennial with annual shoots, with several semi-succulent stems often tinged with red up to c. 50 cm. long. Leaf-lamina 5–81 × 1–23 mm., entire, ranging from linear to linear-oblong, oblong, elliptic, lanceolate, oblanceolate, spathulate, obovate or cuneate, the apex retuse, obtuse, rounded or subacute, often apiculate, the margins flat or slightly revolute; petiole 0–5 mm. long. Inflorescences sessile or pedunculate, often numerous, umbelliform to dichasial, often many-flowered. Flowers hermaphrodite or unisexual, pinkish, scentless; pedicels up to c. 16 mm. long. Perianth-segments 5, 2–4 mm. long in fruit, herbaceous, obtuse or subacute, with red or white membranous margins. Stamens (8)10–15(20) with filaments slightly broadened below. Carpels 5 in hermaphrodite flowers, 10–15 in female flowers. Fruit blackish, densely covered with warts.

Succulent or subsucculent annual or perennial herbs or subshrubs, glabrous or covered with simple or stellate hairs (in Glinus lotoides). Leaves simple, alternate, opposite or verticillate, sometimes crowded, with or without stipules. Inflorescences solitary, cymose, loosely dichasial to umbelliform or glomerate, axillary or terminal. Flowers more or less actinomorphic, hermaphrodite, rarely unisexual (in Gisekia africana). Perianth-segments 5, free, imbricate, herbaceous, persistent. Staminodes often present, sometimes petaloid. Stamens 3–?, hypogynous, sometimes in pairs or fascicles, alternate with the perianth-segments when definite in number; filaments often enlarged below; anthers 2-locular, opening by longitudinal slits. Ovary superior, 2–5-carpellate, apocarpous (in Gisekia) or syncarpous; loculi and stigmas as many as carpels; ovules 1, few or many per loculus; placentation axile or basal. Fruit of achenes, mericarps or loculicidal capsules. Seeds usually subreniform or triangular in outline, sometimes strophiolate; embryo usually curved.
