Branches 18 in. long, hairy. Lower and middle leaves 2 by 1/3 in.; elliptic, hairy on both surfaces, cystoliths obscure; petiole 1/3 in. long. Flowers often 8–15 in densely congested axillary cymes; bracteoles linear, scarcely 1/3 the length of the calyx. Calyx 1/2 in. long, divided 3/4 way down; tube sparsely hairy without, with long white hairs within; teeth long, subulate, with many simple hairs, few glands. Corolla 2/3– 3/4 in. long, purple-red; narrow-cylindric base of tube short; limb somewhat 2-lipped. Stamens 4, subsimilar; anthers oblong, distinctly tailed; pollen longitudinally many ribbed. Style hairy, one stigmatic branch linear, the other suppressed; ovary 4-ovulate. Capsule 1/3 in. long, narrow-cylindric, 4-seeded; seeds covered with hygroscopic hairs.

Perennial or shrubby herb to 0.5 m tall with several erect to decumbent sparsely branched stems from a woody rootstock (rarely a shrub); stems glandular-puberulent to -puberulous or densely so, also with scattered to dense pilose hairs up to 3 mm long. Leaves ovate to elliptic (rarely narrowly so), largest 3–7≈1–3.3 cm, apex acute to subacuminate, subglabrous to puberulent or puberulous, with stalked capitate glands when young, often also with scattered pilose hairs. Flowers in condensed axillary 1–3(–12)-flowered cymes, more rarely in elongated dichasial cymes; peduncles up to 2(–13) mm long, branches up to 7(–20 in open dichasia) mm long; outer bracts lanceolate to elliptic, up to 1.8 cm long or as inner bracts and bracteoles: linear to lanceolate, up to 8 mm long, with scattered to dense capitate glands. Calyx glandular-puberulent to -puberulous or densely so and with scattered to dense long glossy pilose hairs some or all of which over 1 mm long, 12–18(–22 in fruit) mm long; teeth 5–9(–10 in fruit) mm long, shorter than tube (rarely same length). Corolla slightly 2-lipped, pure white with pale yellow throat, puberulent and with scattered capitate glands, 20–26 mm long of which the linear tube 7–11 mm, the throat 6–10 mm and the limb 4–7 mm, throat longer than or same length as limb; lobes oblong to ovate, erect or spreading in lower lip. Free part of filaments 3–6 mm long, hairy at base, glabrous at apex; anthers 1.5–2 mm long, spurs ± 1/2 mm long. Capsule 11–13 mm long. Seed ± 2.5 mm long.

Branches 3–4 ft. long, stout, patently hairy. Leaves 3 1/2 by 1 1/2 in., narrowed at both ends, sparsely hairy, coarsely crenate; petiole 0– 1/4 in. long. Flower-clusters axillary, very dense; bract small, shorter than the calyx. Calyx scarcely 1/5 in. long, 2 anticous segments connate 3/4 their length, 3 others connate scarcely 1/4 their length. Corolla-tube 1/5 in. long, mouth small; anthers muticous, pollen of Disperma. Ovary with 2 ovules in each cell; style nearly glabrous, branches linear, unequal. Capsule scarcely 1/5 in. long, stalked, ellipsoid, flattened, 2-seeded, shining brown.

Perennial or shrubby herb with several unbranched or sparsely branched stems from woody rootstock; stems erect (rarely scrambling or decumbent), to 1.5 m tall, sparsely to densely uniformly puberulous (rarely sericeous), in subsp.verticillaris usually also with stalked capitate glands and long pilose hairs. Mature leaves ovate to elliptic or narrowly so (rarely obovate), largest 3–10.5≈0.9–3.2(–4) cm, apex subacuminate to rounded, beneath uniformly puberulous or denser along veins or along veins only, above uniformly puberulous or sparsely so. Flowers in condensed axillary 3–15-flowered cymes, usually 2 cymes per axil or solitary towards apex, cymes often congested towards tip of stems; peduncle and branches up to 3(–5) mm long, indumentum as stems; outer bracts elliptic or narrowly so, up to 2 cm long, sometimes with capitate glands; inner bracts and bracteoles linear to lanceolate, up to 1 cm long. Calyx sparsely to densely puberulous with non-glandular hairs (subsp.trichocalyx) or viscid glandular-puberulous (subsp.verticillaris), also with or without long pilose non-glandular hairs, (8–)10–19(–21 in fruit) mm long; teeth (4–)5–12(–14 in fruit) mm long, same length or longer than tube. Corolla distinctly 2-lipped, pale mauve to mauve, pale purple to purple, blue to bluish purple (rarely white), usually with darker lines or spots on lower lip and in throat, palate distinctly bullate between veins, puberulent and with scattered capitate glands, 14–29(–37) mm long of which the linear tube 5–12(–14) mm, the throat 3–9(–12) mm and the limb 4–10(–13) mm, throat same length or 1–2 mm shorter than limb; lobes oblong, erect in upper lip, deflexed in lower. Free part of filaments 2–8 mm long, hairy near base, glabrous upwards or hairy to apex; anthers pale violet or mauve, 1–3 mm long, spurs ± 1/4–1/2 mm long often with 1–2 small subsidiary spurs or main spurs branched.
