Leaves oblong or obovate-oblong, more or less acuminate at the apex, obtuse, rounded or subcordate at the base, submembranous, weakly pubescent on the veins and ciliate on the margins when young, glabrescent, 3/4–4 by 1/3–2 1/3 in.; petiole 1/7– 3/4 in. Flowers subhermaphrodite or polygamous, drooping, 1/5 in. long; cymes axillary, glandular-hairy, 3-many-flowered; peduncle 1/5– 1/3 in. long, twice the length of the pedicels, bearing ovate cordate bracts at the apex. Calyx green, 1/7 in. long, more or less accrescent; lobes 4, deltoid, 1/10 in. long, valvate in æstivation. Corolla urceolate, white, deeply 4-lobed; lobes obtuse. Stamens 8, in one row, lanceolate, inserted at the base of the corolla, subsessile, pilose, abortive in female flowers. Ovary shortly tomentose or puberulous, 8-celled or abortive, globose or ovoid-conical; styles 4 or style 4-lobed. Fruit globose, 1 in. diam., puberulous or glabrate, 4-celled. Seeds 4, 1/3 in. long; albumen not ruminated; embryo 1/6 in. long; cotyledons narrow, rather longer than the radicle. Fruiting peduncle strong, 1/4– 1/2 in. long; pedicels 1/3 in. long.
