Stems simple from a creeping woody rhizome, pubescent, striate. Leaves subsessile; lamina 5–13 × 2–4·5 cm., narrowly oblong to oblanceolate, rounded and minutely mucronate at the apex, narrowed or cuneate at the base, papyraceous when young, glabrous on both surfaces, pale green below; lateral nerves c. 6 pairs, tertiary nerves markedly reticulate and prominent below; stipules c. 4 mm. long, linear, pilose. Cymes up to 5 cm. long, c. 8-flowered; peduncle sparsely hairy or glabrous, partially adnate to the stem for c. 5 mm. above the axil; pedicels ± 2 mm. long; bracts c. 2 mm. long. Sepals c. 7 mm. long, narrow, free almost to the base, tomentose at the apex, becoming glabrous towards the base. Petals c. 7 mm. long, narrowly oblong, 2-fid for 2/3 their length, glabrous. Stamens as long as petals. Ovary villous; style c. 6 mm. long, deeply 3-divided. Fruit 4 × 2·5 cm., obovoid.

Recorded from the Transvaal, South West Africa, Angola, Rhodesia, Zambia and western Mozambique; formÂing colonies on rocky sandstone slopes or in sandy areas. Flowering in September-October.
Trees up to 10 m tall or shrubs, sobolifer-ous, occasionally dwarfed; trunk with rough broken bark below, smooth above, grey, flaking to expose cream patches. Branches spreading, brittle, rough, grey, new growth pale fawn. Leaves semi-persistent, turning yellow in wintÂer, shed in spring, young leaves appearing with flowers, oblong to elliptic, c. 10 cm long and c. 2 cm wide but variable in size, apex obtuse, apiculate, base rounded or somewhat attenuate, margin pale, entire in lower half, shallowly serrulate above, midrib and veins prominent, firm and glossy; stipules intrapetiolar, paired, subulate, up to 15 mm long, rarely narrowly spatulate at the apex, early deciduous. Flowers fragrant, in simple, pendulous, clustered, many-flowered racemes terminating short anÂnual branchlets; pedicels c. 1 cm at anthesis, up to 1,8 cm in fruit, articulated above the base. Sepals broadly ovate, 8 mm long, green to yellow, enlarged, reflexed, pink or red and white-edged in fruit. Petals soft yellow, obovate-attenuate, 12 mm long, fugaceous. Stamens numerous (c. 50) with filaments 2 mm long; anthers 1 mm long, biporose. Carpels 6-8, attached centrally on inside of torus; styles fused below, free and recurved above; stigmas apical, tumid. Small shrub 1–2 m. tall, usually branching low down; young sterns brownish-pubescent or glabrescent; older branches not becoming 4-angled and grooved. Leaf-lamina 2–5 × 1–2·75 cm., elliptic-oblong, acute or rounded at the apex, with margins serrate, rounded at the base, sparsely pubescent above or glabrous; nerves reticulate on both sides, slightly pubescent below; petiole 1–3 mm. long, pubescent; stipules c. 2·5 mm. long, subulate, pubescent. Inflorescences all axillary; peduncles 3–6 mm. long, pubescent; pedicels 2–3 together, 2–4 mm. long, pubescent; basal bracts c. 2 mm. long, entire, lanceolate-triangular, pubescent. Flower-buds oblong, somewhat sulcate. Sepals 6–8 × 1 mm., lorate, appressed-pubescent outside, glabrous within. Petals yellow, 5–7 × 1·5 mm., narrowly oblong or lorate, with a basal nectariferous claw 1 mm. long and circumvillous within. Androgynophore 1 mm. long, glabrous, not extended above the node, rather cupular at the apex and clasping the ovary-base. Ovary appressed-pubescent, never lobed; style 8–9 mm. long, glabrous; stigmas usually 4, subulate. Fruit shining, reddish-brown, c. 8 mm. in diam., globose, never lobed, minutely and sparsely stellate-pubescent.
