shrub, 6–12 ft. high; twigs slender, covered with rust-coloured scales when young; leaves fragrant, subverticillate, distinctly petioled, firmly papery, penninerved, lanceolate or elliptic-lanceolate, obtuse and slightly emarginate, base rounded or wide-cuneate, margin entire, 1/2–2 in. long, 1/4– 3/4 in. wide, dark green, quite glabrous above, densely clothed beneath with silvery scales and rusty scales intermixed; lateral nerves 9–12 on each side, slightly raised above, not visible beneath; petiole up to 1 in. long, scaly like undersurface of leaf which is without glands at its attachment to the petiole; stipules minute, subulate; racemes androgynous, much abbreviated, forming small dense corymbs, 1/3 in. across, at the tips of the shoots; male pedicels about 1/6 in. long when flower opens; sepals ovate, 1 lin. long, coriaceous, densely scaly externally, the margins puberulous within; petals oblong-lanceolate, obtuse, with villous margins, otherwise glabrous on both surfaces; disc-glands minute; stamens 15–18; filaments explanate and sparingly hairy below; receptacle pubescent; female sepals as in male; petals rather narrower and shorter than in male; disc thin, glabrous; ovary densely clothed with large, orbicular scales; styles 2-partite almost to the base, the arms subterete, glabrous; capsule 3-lobed, 1/3 in. long, densely scaly; seeds ellipsoid, brown. null

Shrub or small tree 2–4 m tall, aromatic; young branchlets densely covered with silvery and/or brown scales, the scales entire or almost so. Leaves crowded and almost whorled at ends of branchlets; blade elliptic or elliptic-lanceolate, 3–9.5 x 1–3 cm, obtuse or emarginate at the apex, cuneate to almost rounded at the base, entire, glabrous and dark green above, densely covered with silvery scales as well as scattered brown scales beneath, scales minutely denticulate; petiole 0.3–1.5 cm long. Racemes terminal, c. 1 cm long, resembling a globular cluster. Flowers densely covered by silvery scales, the female with 3 spreading styles c. 1.5 mm long, bipartite with linear-subulate lobes. Fruit subglobose, c. 6 mm in diam., septicidal, densely covered with silvery scales and scattered brown scales. Seeds 5 x 3 mm, with a hemispherical caruncle c. 1.5 mm wide.

A shrub 6–12 ft. high; branchlets slender, twiggy, covered with rust-coloured scales when young. Leaves fragrant, subverticillate, lanceolate or elliptic-lanceolate, more or less narrowed to an obtuse or slightly emarginate apex, obtuse or subacute at the base, 1/2–3 inches long, 1/4–1 1/6 in. broad, rigidly chartaceous, entire, mostly very dark brown and always glabrous above when dry, covered below with silvery scales with yellow centres; lateral nerves 9–12 on each side, slightly raised above, not visible or only a little raised below; glands at the base absent; petiole up to 1 in. long, scaly; stipules minute. Flowers monœcious. Racemes very much abbreviated, giving the flowers a clustered appearance at the apex of each shoot. Male flowers: pedicel about 2 lin. long at the opening of the flower. Sepals ovate, 1 lin. long, 3/4 lin. broad, coriaceous, covered on the outside with numerous large overlapping orbicular scales, glabrous within except towards the puberulous margin. Petals oblong-lanceolate, rounded at the apex, 1 1/4 lin. long, 1/3 lin. broad, submembranous, glabrous on both sides, margin villous. Disk-glands very small. Stamens 15–18; filaments flattened below, sparingly pilose in the lower half. Receptacle pubescent. Female flowers: Sepals as in the males. Petals oblanceolate, as long as the sepals. Disk very thin, glabrous. Ovary densely covered with numerous large overlapping scales; styles bipartite to near the base; segments subterete, glabrous. Capsule trilobed, 1/3 in. long, covered with numerous overlapping scales. Seeds ellipsoid, brown, 1/4 in. long, 1/6 in. broad.
