Small tree up to 8 (15) m. tall; bark papery, green when young, rusty-red and flaking off when old; young branches pubescent, spiny. Leaves pinnate; petiole c. 1 cm. long, densely pubescent; leaflets 6–10-jugate, lamina up to 7·5 × 2·3 cm., lowest leaflets smaller and ovate, others narrowly oblong, terminal one obovate-oblong, apex obtuse or subacute, margins serrate, base rounded and often slightly asymmetric, pubescent on both surfaces or at least on the nerves beneath, venation prominently reticulate. Flowers in axillary sessile clusters on short side-shoots. Calyx c. 2 mm. long, campanulate, lobed somewhat less than half-way, densely pubescent outside. Petals c. 4·5 mm. long, densely pubescent outside. Stamen-filaments subterete. Disk 4-lobed. Fruit c. 1·8 cm. in diam., subglobose, somewhat what flattened, glabrous; pseudaril with 4 wavy-margined arms; endocarp c. 1 cm. in diam., lumpy-rugose, with 2 moderately convex faces.

Plant glabrous; twigs soon terete. Leaves alternate and clustered on short shoots; petiole 0–1 mm. long; lamina coriaceous, glaucous, elliptic-oblong to obovate, 1–5 cm. long, 0.3–3 cm. wide, bluntly pointed to rounded at the apex, with a pair of strongly ascending lateral nerves from a little above the base. Flowers 1–4 in subsessile umbels terminal on short shoots usually after the primary leaves have fallen; peduncle to 0.5 mm. long; pedicels 1 mm. long; bract cupular, with a short concave lobe, keeled, 2–3.5 mm. long, ± jagged or ciliolate. Receptacle 1–1.5 mm. long; calyx tubular, 5–6 mm. long, shortly lobed. Corolla 2.9–3.5 cm. long, yellow, greenish yellow or rarely red and yellow, opening by a unilateral split; tube 1–1.5 cm. long, with 5 small hairy flaps forming a ring inside; lobes slightly broadened upwards, reflexed from a little above the base after anthesis. Filaments attached at the base of the lobes, incurved and shedding anthers at anthesis, with a small tooth in front of the anther. Berry red, obovoid, 7 mm. long, 4 mm. in diameter.
