Rhizome c. 5 mm. in diam., subterranean, creeping, usually surrounded by a dense mat of roots, with closely spaced fronds and with subulate entire brown rhizome scales which are darker towards their hair-point apices. Stipe castaneous. up to 28 cm. long, glabrous except at the base. Frond erect, thinly coriaceous, Lamina broadly deltate in outline, 4-pinnatifid with the lowest pair of pinnae about as long as the rest of the lamina and much developed basiscopically; pinnules set at an acute angle to the castaneous secondary rhachises; ultimate segments up to 1 cm. long, cultrate, glabrous, strongly dentate-serrate, adnate to the rhachis and decurrent at the base. Sori c. 0.5 mm. in diam., minute, solitary in the sinuses of the marginal teeth of the ultimate segments; indusium minute, broadly ovate, irregularly crenate, semi-transparent.

Rhizome scales 3–4 mm long. Fronds few, tufted or closely spaced, 15–50 cm tall; stipe 2–28 cm long; lamina triangular-ovate to broadly ovate, 5–20 cm long, 8–25 cm wide, 3-pinnate with pinnules deeply pinnatifid; lowest pair of pinnae about equalling rest of lamina and well developed basiscopically; pinnules triangular in outline, 1.7–2 cm long, 0.8–1 cm wide, deeply pinnatifid into ± 9 toothed narrowly oblong ultimate segments, ± 8 mm long, 2 mm wide. Sori pale, ± 1 mm long with minute ovate crenate indusium. Fig. 1 (p. 3).
