Found in forests, mostly on the margins or in open parts. Recorded from Kentani in the Cape, from the eastern half of Natal and from Swaziland. Occurs also in east tropical Africa.
Shrub, often scandent, 1-2-7 m sometimes up to 7 m tall; lateral branchlets patent, subterete, new growth tomentulose with stellate hairs intermixed. Stipules absent or very soon deciduous, represented by a faint interpetiolar ridge. Leaves opposite or subopposite, persistent, petiole bases prominent, concave; blade ovate-lanceolate, ovate-oblong or obovate-oblong, varying in size on the same branch, ranging from about 2 ? 5 cm long and 1 cm broad to about 9 cm long and 3 • 8 cm broad, apex acuminate to an acute point, base cuneate and decurrent on the petiole, upper surface green, usually drying dark, at first stellate-pubescent, glabrescent, midrib and veins slightly impressed, under surface tawny and rufous, stellate-tomentose, midrib and veins slightly raised, margin entire or with a few irregular deep lobes; petiole 0-5-1-7 cm long, tomentulose, glabrescent, channelled above, winged at least in upper part by the decurrent blade. Panicles cymose, axillary and ultimate cymes more or less congested into false umbels; bracts linear-terete, 1-4 mm long, tomentulose; peduncles tomentulose; pedicels short, about 1 mm long, tomentulose. Calyx tubular, about 4 mm long, densely stellate-tomentose without; tube about 3 mm long, glabrous within; lobes about 1 mm long, broadly ovate subobtuse, erect. Corolla cream, light orange to whitish with orange centre, tubular, sparsely stellate-tomentulose outside at least to the basal portion of the lobes; tube about 7 mm long, loosely pubescent within below the stamens; slightly widened and opened at the throat which is glabrous: lobes about 2 mm long, subquadrate-orbicular to oblong, broadly rounded at the apex, sometimes retuse, slightly narrowed at the base, spreading to reflexed, at least one strongly reflexed, glabrous within, stellate-tomentulose at least at base dorsally. Stamens inserted just above the middle, free part of filament filiform, about as long as the anther; anthers included. Ovary more or less oblong in outline, stellate-tomentulose, about 1-5 mm long; style subglabrous, about 1-5 mm long; stigma narrow-clavate, terminal, stigmatic surface decurrent for 1-5 mm. Capsule about 5 mm long, exserted from the persistent calyx for little over half its length, stellate-tomentulose or minutely lepidote without. Fig. 22: 3.

Shrub, often climbing, 1–10 m. high and up to at least 20 m. long. Branchlets terete, white– or pale grey–tomentose with stellate hairs; indumentum drying rusty. Leaves opposite or subopposite, petiolate; petiole 5–20 mm. long; lamina variable in shape and size, ovate, triangular, oblong or narrowly oblong, or narrowly obovate, 1·2–3 times as long as wide, 1·8–10(–15) x 1–5(–7) cm., acuminate to obtuse at the apex, gradually or abruptly narrowed at the base and at the same time mostly decurrent into the petiole, sometimes with 1–2 large lobes near the base, furthermore entire, pale grey–stellate–tomentose, glabrescent, and with costa (and often main veins) impressed above, stellate–tomentose to pilose beneath; venation inconspicuous. Stipules none. Inflorescence paniculate, very variable in size, usually lax; 3–25 x 2–25 cm., several times branched. Flowers in rather loose clusters, shortly pedicellate or sessile, sweet–scented or malodorant. Calyx cylindrical or nearly so, 3–5 x 1·2–3 mm., white–stellate–tomentose outside (indumentum usually drying rusty), inside glabrous; tube 4–8 times as long as the lobes; lobes subequal, broadly to very narrowly triangular, 0·5–1 x 0·5–1 mm., acute or obtuse, entire. Corolla white, pale orange, or yellow to whitish with orange or yellow throat, with 7–12 mm. long erect lobes, outside stellate–tomentose, inside hirto–pilose in a 2–3 mm. wide ring which has its lower edge at 1–2 mm. above the base; tube nearly cylindrical, 1·5–2·5 times as long as the calyx, 3·7–6·5 times as long as the lobes, 5·5–9 mm. long, usually slightly widened towards the 1–1·8 mm. wide throat; lobes subcircular to oblong, 1·3 x 1·2–5 mm., broadly rounded, entire, spreading to reflexed. Stamens included; anthers sessile with the apex 0–1 mm. below the corolla mouth, oblong, 2–5 times as long as wide, 0·8–1·2 x 0·2–0·5 mm., deeply cordate at the base, rounded to retuse at the apex, glabrous; cells parallel. Pistil 2·5–5·2 mm. long, stellate–tomentose, often glabrous at the apex of the style; ovary ovoid or narrowly ovoid, often laterally compressed, 1·2 x 0·4 to 1·2 x 0·4–1 mm.; style rather short; stigma clavate to subcapitate, decurrent into the style, 0·8–1·2 mm. long. Each cell with one axile oblong placenta with 1–15 ovules outside. Capsule narrowly ellipsoid, 4·5–6 x 1·2 to 1·8 x 1·2 to 1·5 mm., 1·4–2 times as long as the calyx, acute at the apex, hairy like the ovary but less densely; valves often split at the apex. Seed pale brown, oblong, flat, 2·5–2·8 x 0·5–0·8 x 0·2–0–3 mm., narrowly winged at the edges or sometimes not winged; wings acuminate at both ends, minutely reticulate all over.
