leaves (unknown); corolla thrice or four times as long as the sharply 4-cleft calyx, its segments broadly oblong, very blunt or truncate; stamens as long as the tube of the corolla. Of this very remarkable plant a portion of a denuded branch, and part of a dense, probably thyrsoid, inflorescence exist in Herb. Sonder. The internodes are scarcely an inch long, and there are 4 cicatrices, indicating whorled leaves, at each node. Calyx 3 lines long. Corolla uncial, bright red, its lobes almost square, 2 1/2 lines long.

Found in disturbed areas and on roadsides, especÂially in sheltered frost-free areas of the eastern TransÂvaal, but also often seen as a garden escape in and around towns.
Sparse glabrous shrublets up to 2 m high, with one or few erect terete branches, often growing in dense stands; roots not thickened. Leaves ternate, to apparently opÂposite or alternate, sessile, glabrous, terete, (20-)25-80(-120) x (2-)3-5 mm in diam. with 5-8 apical teeth producing pseudobulÂbils in their axils, more or less grooved above, grey-green and with darker spots. InÂflorescence a rounded thyrse with several closely clustered dichasia. Calyx with lobes triangular-lanceolate, 5-10 mm long. CoÂrolla pale orange to deep magenta; tube widened in middle and at throat, 25-33 mm long, lobes oblong-obovate, 8-12 x 6-9 mm. Anthers 2-2,5 mm long. Squamae obÂlong to almost square, 1,3-2 mm long, rounded at apex. Seeds 2-2,5 mm long. Fig. 10.

Native of Madagascar
A completely glabrous perennial succulent. Stem 0·20–1·20 m. high, erect, simple, terete, with sterile shoots at the base. Leaves ternate or alternate in the adult plant, opposite in the first nodes of the young shoots, ± caducous at flowering time, 1·5–13 cm. long and 2–6 mm. in diameter, terete, slightly canaliculate on the upper face, with 2–9 small apical teeth producing pseudbulbils in their axils, sessile, usually straight, erect to spreading, fleshy, greyish- or dull-green, spotted with dark green or red. Flowers in cymes forming a terminal, rather dense corymbose inflorescence up to 10–15 cm. in diameter; pedicels 6–20 mm. long. Calyx equalling 1/4–1/3 of corolla, campanulate, green striped with red; tube 2·5–5 mm. long; lobes 5·8–7·7 x 3·7–5·7 mm., lanceolate, very acute. Corolla reddish–orange or reddish–ochre below, pale yellow suffused with red upwards; tube 22–5·35 mm. long, rather constricted just above the carpels, subfunnel–shaped–campanulate upwards; lobes 7–10·2 x 7–9·8 mm., obovate, obtuse or truncate, apiculate, spreading. Stamens attaining the top of corolla; filaments inserted below the middle of the corolla–tube; anthers 1–2 x 1–1·7 mm., broadly ovate. Carpels c. 6·15 mm. long, adnate for c. 1·65 mm.; styles 19·5 mm. long. Scales 0·7–1·6 x 0·85–1·4 mm., semicircular to trapeziform. Seeds 0·6 x 0·3 mm., obovoid.
