Rhizome 7 mm. in diam.; erect to suberect, with tufted fronds and with subulate dark-brown distinctly clathrate subentire attenuate rhizome-scales up to 1.2 cm. long. Frond arching, not proliferous, thinly coriaceous. Stipe matt-brown, up to 8 cm. long, densely covered with subulate hair-like scales similar to those on the rhizome up to 5 mm. long. Lamina up to 22 x 9 cm., simply pinnate, elliptic in outline, acute, basal pinnae reduced. Pinnae up to 5 x 0.8 cm., up to 36 pairs, lanceolate to attenuate, base unequally cuneate, slightly auriculate acroscopically shallowly incised into obtuse or shallowly crenate lobes, sparsely set with dark hair-like and ovate longly acuminate scales up to 3 mm. long. Sori up to 5 mm. long, linear set at about 15º to the costa; indusium linear, membranous, entire.

Low-epiphytic or less often terrestrial fern, occasionally in moist rock crevices; rhizome widely creeping, branching, up to 8 mm diameter, with fronds 3–4 cm apart and with iridescent brown narrowly triangular entire attenuate rhizome scales 3–5 mm long ending in a short hair-point. Fronds widely spaced, erect, not proliferous, 60–200 cm long with pinnae, thinly coriaceous. Stipe dark brown to almost black, (11–)15–70(–77?) cm long, with few brown lanceolate to ovate small scales similar to those on the rhizome. Lamina very narrowly elliptic to lanceolate in outline, 26–101x10–26 cm, 1-pinnate to 2-pinnatifid, acuminate, basal pinnae somewhat reduced, apical segment deeply pinnatifid or less often the apical pinnae decrescent. Pinnae 14–35 pairs, alternate or subopposite, (shiny) dark green above, narrowly lanceolate, 6–14(–25)x1–2.3(–3) cm, mostly shortly petiolate, unequally cuneate at the base tending to be slightly auriculate acroscopically, coarsely serrate to shallowly lobed with serrate lobes to 2/3 of the way to the costa, the lobes at a 45° angle, apex linear-attenuate, glabrous on both surfaces except for scattered pale brown ovate-acuminate scales ± 1 mm long; costa closer to basiscopic margin, veins forked and at very sharp angle with the costa. Rachis dull brown to purple-brown to black, not winged, glabrous at maturity or nearly so. Sori usually many, oblong, 3–9 mm long, 1–3 mm wide at maturity, borne in 2 rows closely set along and parallel to the costa; indusium linear, membranous, entire, ± 1 mm wide, occasionally hidden when the sori are almost contiguous and sporangia are at full development. Rhizome up to 5 mm. in diam., creeping, with fronds spaced c. 4 mm. apart and with brown clathrate minutely pseudoserrate narrowly ovate rhizome-scales up to 2 mm. long. Frond arching, herbaceous, proliferous near the apex of the frond. Stipe up to 18 cm. long, atrocastaneous, densely set with ovate to broadly ovate clathrate pale scales of various sizes up to 1.5 mm. long together with multicellular hairs. Lamina up to 65 x 10 cm., shallowly to deeply pinnatifid, very narrowly elliptic in outline. Pinnae up to 6 x 1.6 cm., up to 46 pairs, lanceolate, rhombic, attenuate, base unequally cuneate, pinnately divided into linear-oblong acute 2-fid or 3-fid or broadly cuneate and deeply incised lobes, acroscopic basal lobe the largest and often overlapping the rhachis, thinly pubescent above and below especially near the base, densely so along the costa, dorsally with clathrate ovate brown scales up to 1 mm. long. Rhachis atrocastaneous, densely pubescent with whitish hairs and with occasional ovate scales. Sori up to 5 mm. long, linear and very narrowly oblong, set at 25º to the costa; indusium linear, membranous, entire.
