Rhizome up to 5 mm. in diam., creeping, with loosely tufted fronds, shining brown entire lanceolate clathrate rhizome-scales up to 5 mm. long. Frond arching, not proliferous, firmly herbaceous. Stipe matt-brown, with appressed scales similar to those of the rhizome near the base, subglabrous above. Lamina up to 33 x 27 cm., 3–4-pinnate, ovate-triangular in outline, basal pinnae the largest. Pinnae up to 15 x 12 cm., triangular in outline, ultimate segments up to 8 x 2 mm., narrowly cuneate, sharply serrate at the apex, glabrous on both surfaces. Rhachis and secondary rhachises dark-brown, with sparse ovate-acuminate pale-brown clathrate scales c. 1 mm. long. Sori up to 4 mm. long, 1–2 per ultimate segment; indusium linear, membranous, entire.

Terrestrial, low epiphyte, or lithophyte; rhizome shortly creeping to suberect, up to 5 mm diameter, with shining dark brown clathrate narrowly triangular entire rhizome scales up to 6x0.3–1 mm, attenuate and ending in a hair-tip. Frond shortly spaced or tufted, arching, firmly herbaceous, generally 30–50 cm long, not proliferous. Stipe matt brown to black, 9–40 cm long, with appressed scales similar to those of the rhizome near the base, subglabrous above. Lamina dark green on upper surface, ovate-triangular in outline, (8–)20–33(–60)x(4–)10–27 cm, 3–4-pinnate to 5-pinnatifid, finely dissected, basal pinnae the largest, apex decrescent. Pinnae in 15–20 pairs, broadly ovate or triangular in outline, up to 17x10 cm, ultimate segments wedge-shaped or narrowly obcuneate, up to 8–10x2–4 mm, apex doubly serrate-truncate with teeth to 2 mm long, glabrous on both surfaces or with a few minute scales beneath. Rachis and secondary rachises dark brown, with sparse pale brown ovate-acuminate clathrate scales 1–2 mm long. Sori 1–3 per ultimate segment, 1.5–6 mm long; indusium linear, membranous, entire, 0.3–0.4 mm wide. Fig. 8: 1–3, p. 47.

DISTR. U 1–4; K 1–7; T 1–4, 6–8 throughout tropical Africa and to South Africa; Indian Ocean islands
Epiphyte, lithophyte or occasionally terrestrial; rhizome erect or shortly creeping, occasionally long-creeping, up to 7 mm diameter, with dark brown to blackish subulate to narrowly triangular (sub-)entire attenuate clathrate scales 3–7x0.3–0.6 mm, with very narrow paler margin, ending in a hair-point. Frond tufted to shortly spaced, usually arching, not proliferous, firmly herbaceous to thinly coriaceous. Stipe dark brown to blackish, 4–40 cm long, covered at first with a mixture of scales similar to those on rhizome and mid-brown basally ovate, attenuate clathrate often rather hair-like scales to 3 mm with margin entire or with a few hair-like outgrowths, becoming subglabrous with age except near base. Lamina ovate to lanceolate in outline, 8–60x2.5–16 cm, 2-pinnate to 3-pinnatifid or even 3-pinnatisect on lowermost pinnules, with the lower pinnae not reduced or occasionally slightly reduced; apical pinnae gradually decrescent. Pinnae in 7–25 pairs, dark to olive green, deltoid to narrowly lanceolate, and pinnatifid to 2-pinnatifid, 1.5–12x0.7–4 cm, base stalked, unequally cuneate, divided into narrowly obcuneate to narrowly oblong segments, pinnules in general irregularly incised and serrate or crenate at their apices, scaly to glabrous beneath, sparsely scaly to glabrous on the upper surface. Rachis dark brown to blackish, green above and distally, covered with mostly hair-like scales but with some lanceolate scales, similar to those on the stipe, becoming subglabrous with age. Sori closely packed along the veins, linear, 2.5–10 mm long, when sporulating may obscure lower surface of pinnule; indusium very narrowly linear, membranous, subentire, 0.3–0.5 mm wide.
