Leaves sessile, erect, opposite, oblong-lanceolate to linear-lanceolate, 10–30 mm long, 2–3.5 mm wide, 1-veined, hispid on both surfaces with usually bulbous-based coarse hairs on thickened margins, fine retrorsely hairy otherwise, margins entire with 2–3 obscure teeth on each side, apex rounded. Inflorescence of terminal spike-like racemes, sometimes lax; flowers solitary in the axils of leaf-like bracts; pedicel 0–0.5 mm. Bracts oblong-ovate to ovate, ± 10 mm long, with 1–3-veins prominent, entire, margins with tubercle-based retrorse hairs, retrorse hairs on the veins, ± glabrous otherwise; bracteoles ovate, 5–18 mm long, acute or obtuse. Calyx 7–8 mm long, 10-veined, ± glabrous to finely and sparsely pubescent with ± retrorse hairs on the margins and veins; lobes 2.5–3 mm, ovate, acute. Erect annual herb, 10–50(250) cm. tall; stems slender, erect, simple or branched from about midway or above, hispid with retrorse hairs. Leaves sessile, all opposite, erect, subappressed, 10–20(30) x 1.5–3 mm., linear-lanceolate or oblong, obtuse, broadly caudate to rounded at base, fine appressed retrorse hirsute especially beneath; margin thickened, bristly with short tubercle-based coarse hairs, 2–3(4) thickened teeth on each side, subprominently 1-nerved. Flowers in subcompact spike-like racemes at ends of branches, shortly pedicellate, solitary in axils of leaf-like bracts, inflorescence becoming lax at fruiting. Pedicels 1–1.5 mm. long. Bracts 5–18 x 2–3.75 mm., ovate, acute or obtuse, 1-nerved, leaf-like, entire or with 1 or 2 teeth towards apex. Bracteoles 3–5 x 0.5–1.75 mm., linear. Calyx 6.5–7 mm. long, clearly 10-nerved, subglabrous to finely retrorse pubescent especially on nerves; lobes 2.5–3 mm. long, shorter than tube, triangular, obtuse, coarsely hairy on margin. Corolla yellow with purplish venation, to c. 12 mm. long, narrow at base widening into limb of short, rounded, subequal lobes. Filaments all glabrous, anther thecae apiculate. Capsule 5–6 x c. 3 mm., oblong-ovoid.
