stems herbaceous, procumbent, much branched, villous; leaves alternate obovate-cuneiform, petiolate, pubescent; flowers sessile, subadnate at the origin of the branches; stigmas 5, thick. Stem or primary branches 1/2 foot long. Leaves 1/2–1 inch, spathulate, obtuse, attenuated in a petiole nearly as long or longer than the lamina. Calyx 5-angled, lobes 1 line long or longer. Capsule much depressed.

stems herbaceous, ascendent-erect, as well as the leaves and calyces densely beset with papulæ; leaves alternate or subopposite, spathulate-oblong, cuneate or shortly petiolate; flowers axillary, sessile; styles 5, as long as the calyx. Nearly 1/2 foot high, glittering from papulæ. Branches terete, primary opposite, upper ones alternate. Leaves 3/4–1 inch long. 2–3 lines wide, much smaller in the branchlets, 3–4 lines long, 1 line wide. Flowers 1 line long, lobes ovate, acute. Capsule 5-angled, twice smaller than in A. Canariense.

Extending from the Canaries eastward to Scinde; occurs also at the Cape.
A diffuse or prostrate herb, branches often widely spreading, woody towards the crown, more or less uniformly cellular-pilose tomentose or papillose. Leaves obovate or elliptical narrowed into the petiole to spathulate obtuse, with the petiole 1/2–2 in. (–3 in.) long. Flowers sessile in almost every fork or axil. Calyx-lobes ovate, acute, imbricate in æstivation. Fruit pentagonal-stelliform, 1/5– 1/3 in., valves inflexed, the apex attached to the column.

Annual or short-lived perennial herb. Stems prostrate, thick and tough, pilose and finely papillose, mostly part of the largely apparently monochasial inflorescence. Leaves very regularly alternate, flat on the ground; petiole 3–16 mm long; leaf-blade suborbicular to oblanceolate, up to 4 x 4 cm, base decurrent into petiole, tip rounded to bluntly subacuminate, pilose above and below. Flowers (4–)5-merous, apparently solitary in axils or forks of branches, sessile. Tepals acute, yellowish inside, reddish or green and pilose outside. Stamens 12–15 in groups alternating with tepals. Styles short, soon lost. Fruit (4–)5-sided/star-shaped, 5–8 mm diam., depressed in centre, opening by (4–)5 inflexed valves which remain attached near the centre. Seeds many, reniform, concentrically ridged.

A prostrate often rather thick and many-stemmed annual or perennial herb. Stem up to c. 40 cm. long, pilose, often also finely papillose. Leaves alternate, leaf-lamina 8–70 × 4–45 mm., suborbicular to oblanceolate-obovate, rounded or bluntly subacuminate at apex, decurrent into the petiole at base, ± pilose on both sides, entire, with petiole 3–18 mm. long. Flowers solitary in leaf-axils or in forks of the branches, sessile, often numerous. Perianth segments 5, c. 3 mm. long, triangular, acute, yellowish inside, greenish or reddish and pilose outside. Stamens c. 12–15, inserted on calyx-tube in fascicles at the base of the sinuses between calyx-lobes. Ovary 5-locular; styles 5, short; stigmas 5. Fruit 5–9 mm. in diameter, usually red or pink, pentagonal, stellate, depressed centrally, splitting into 5 valves, these inflexed and remaining attached to the centre of the ovary. Seeds ?, reniform, concentrically ridged.

Leaves alternate, petiolate; blade suborbicular to oblanceolate-obovate, rounded obtuse or bluntly subacuminate at apex, decurrent into the petiole at the base, more or less pilose on both sides, entire, 6–40 mm. long, 2–40 mm. broad; petiole 3–16 mm. long. Flowers solitary in leaf-axils or in the forks of the branches, sessile, often numerous. Calyx-lobes 5 (rarely 4) triangular, acute, yellowish inside, greenish or reddish and pilose outside. Stamens about 12–15, inserted on the calyx-tube in fascicles at the bases of the sinuses between the calyx-lobes. Styles short, deciduous. Fruit usually red or pink, pentagonal (rarely tetragonal) stelliform, depressed centrally, 5–8 mm. diameter, splitting into 5 (rarely 4) valves, the valves as many as the carpels, inflexed and remaining attached to the centre of the ovary.
